The County of Essex is launching an active transportation pilot project to enhance safety through the use of bollards, curbing and increased signage on County Road 2/Old Tecumseh Road from East Pike Creek Road to County Road 22 in Lakeshore.
The pilot project will more clearly separate the active transportation corridor from the roadway, creating protected bike lanes and promoting an improved user experience for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists.
County crews refreshed the road markings in late May 2021. After that they installed temporary bollards and rubber curbing along the 5-kilometre stretch of County Road 2. County crews also applied intermittent sections of green paint, further differentiating the bicycle lanes from the roadway. As well, signage will be enhanced along the route and barriers placed at intersections.
Project Details
Intersection Treatments
Concrete barriers with signs defining lanes for vehicular and active transportation corridors are being erected at the following intersections:
- Cleophas
- Elmgrove
- Leffler Park
- Patillo
- Pierella
- Walstedt
- Wallace Line
Bollards and Rubber Curbs
Bollards are being set up approximately every 30 metres to clearly separate the active transportation corridor from vehicular traffic. Rubber curbs will be placed on the approach side of an intersection with a bollard.
Green Paint
Intermittent sections of the bike lane are being painted green to identify it as an active transportation corridor separate and distinct from the roadway for vehicles.
