More than 340 km of active transportation corridors, including bike lanes, paved shoulders and signed routes have been constructed since the County of Essex adopted the County Wide Active Transportation System Master Plan in 2012.
Ongoing Projects
Committee: A CWATS committee meets regularly to provide input and guidance on the implementation of the Master Plan. Committee members include representatives from the local municipalities, the Essex Region Conservation Authority and the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.
Construction: About 342 km of new bike lanes, paved shoulders, cycle paths, multi-use trails and signed routes have been constructed. The 20-year goal is the construction of a network spanning some 800 km.
Community: Our outreach and education programs are designed to engage and inform residents about recreational opportunities and the benefits of active living.
Branding CWATS
Our slogan is ‘Walk. Ride. County Wide.' Our logo is based off this slogan, which topped two others as a the favourite in a public outreach contest.
Find Your Way
Our wayfinding signage program provides clear and consistent messaging for users of our paths and trails. Our signs allow users to take longer trips more easily and they consistently remind motorists of the amazing network of active transportation corridors that crisscross the County.
‘Share The Road'
The County of Essex has installed several “Share The Road” signs along Signed Routes to make our roadways safer and more efficient for both cyclist and motorists. This is one of several signs commonly used by CWATS.
