Surrounded on three sides by water and located in the far south of Ontario, Essex County enjoys long summers and short winters, and is the warmest county in the province.
With Lake Erie to the south, the Detroit River to the west and Lake St. Clair to the north, our climate is heavily influenced by the water. The water encourages warmer temperatures in the winter and is a source of humidity in the summer.
Essex County enjoys seven months of short-sleeve weather every year. It is not uncommon for golfers to take advantage of warm spells to tee it up in the dead and dark of winter. The temperature hits 10 C or higher more than 220 days per year.
We still live in Canada, though, and we still endure cold, snowy winters. We experience 53 days per year on average when snow depths are greater than 1 centimetre. By way of comparison, that number is 10 in Vancouver, 65 in Toronto, 88 in Calgary, 120 in Ottawa and 132 in Winnipeg.
