Essex County, ON – Users of the County Wide Active Transportation System are invited to celebrate the trails and pathways of Essex County during a month-long photo contest in June marking Bike Month.
Whether they are cycling, walking or running, or using the Greenway, a bike lane or a multi-use pathway, active transportation users can share their photos on social media with the hashtag #CWATS or upload them using an online submission form on the County of Essex website.
The photos will be shared on CWATS and County of Essex social media channels and will be used to promote the CWATS network. Each photo shared constitutes one entry that will be part of a random draw for prizes including bike locks and helmets.
Entrants, like all users of the CWATS network, must abide at all times by all health and physical distancing guidelines in place due to COVID-19.
“Our trail system has enjoyed increased usage during this pandemic because it allows residents to get fresh air and exercise while still following social distancing protocols,” said Diana Radulescu, CWATS Active Transportation Coordinator. “We are fortunate in Essex County to have so many recreational opportunities and we hope this campaign encourages residents to get outdoors and get active while staying safe.”
The CWATS network spans some 400 km across all seven local municipalities in Essex County and links to trail systems in Windsor and Chatham-Kent. Construction over the next 15 years will see the network of trails, pathways and signed routes expand to about 800 km.
Walk! Ride! County Wide!
Bike Month Highlights:
ParticipACTION App – During the month of June 2021, you can track your physical exercise (and active transportation outings) using the ParticipACTION app. The free app is a fun, and evidence-informed tool that empowers you on your physical activity journey no matter where you live, work, or play!
Bike Lockers: This summer you’ll be able to rent bike lockers at key destinations around Essex County. Bike lockers provide cyclists with the highest security in bike storage. Updates and more information on this program will be shared on our website as it is developed.
‘How to Videos’ - Bike Repair stations have been installed around Essex County for cyclists to re-inflate tires, tune up their bikes and make repairs while away from home. Three stations have been installed along the CWATS network to improve the reliability of cycling as a mode of transport or recreational activity and more are on the way. Watch the videos to learn how to properly complete common bike repairs.
MyCWATS Online Mapping - MyCWATS is the first interactive map for active transportation in Essex County. It allows you to explore the CWATS network and local trail networks.
Updating our CWATS Master Plan - The County of Essex adopted in 2012 the County Wide Active Transportation System Master Plan, which calls for a dramatic expansion of active transportation corridors like walking paths and bicycle lanes to encourage healthy, active living and enhance regional recreational opportunities. The County of Essex is currently updating the 2012 Master Plan.
