Sun Parlor Home is located on a 23-acred forested lot in sunny Leamington and has been providing quality, resident-focused care for more than a century.

Features

There is a beautiful Chapel on site along with a beauty salon, auditorium and a private dining room for events. There is also a daily tea service in the Garden View café and a well-stocked tuck shop run by our friendly volunteers.

Our walls are adorned with beautiful murals depicting rural life in Essex County and landmarks like Point Pelee National Park.

Residents' Bill of Rights

Ontario's Long-Term Care Homes Act includes a Residents' Bill of Rights.

Sun Parlor Home respects and promotes the Residents' Bill of Rights to ensure the health and wellbeing of our residents.

Innovative Care

We place an emphasis on in-home care and bring specialists and equipment, including an X-Ray machine, to Sun Parlor Home to ease the travel burden on our residents.

Services

Medical Services

The home's Medical Director guides the home in relation to the following services:

  • Advice regarding medical care of residents
  • Advice regarding support services as required
  • Advice regarding quality of services provided to residents

The Medical Director is available by appointment for discussions with family regarding any concerns about the care provided to residents.

A resident may also be attended by their own family physician. Arrangement should be made through the Medical Director.

Availability of Medical Services

Medical services are available to all residents of the Home 24 hours a day. Supportive hospital care is provided at Erie Shores HealthCare in Leamington. Windsor or London hospital and specialist referrals will be made at the direction of the resident's physician.

Nursing Department

The Nursing Department is responsible for the provision of care that promotes the quality of life and considers each resident's individuality, personal well-being, dignity and freedom of choice. Personal care is provided on a 24-hour basis.

The Nursing Department is comprised of:

  • Registered nurses (RN)
  • Registered practical nurses (RPN)
  • Health care aides
  • Personal support workers (PSW)

Responsibilities of the nursing department include the administration of drugs, skin and wound care, and personal care such as bathing and grooming.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the assessment, planning, provision and evaluation of programs and services to meet their care needs.

Menus and Snacks

Residents can expect to enjoy delicious, nutritious and attractive meals prepared in Sun Parlor Home's kitchen by certified cooks and food service staff.

  • Menus rotate regularly to reflect the seasons and are based on Canada's Food Guide, a buy local initiative, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care standards and input from residents.
  • Residents are also provided with snacks between meals and in the evening (10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.).
  • A free afternoon tea service for residents and their families is available in the Garden View Café Monday to Saturday from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Family and friends are welcome to join residents for meals at a minimum fee of $8 per meal. Meal tickets can be purchase any day at the main reception or café.

Dietitian services

Sun Parlor Home offers registered dietitian services:

  • Each resident will have a nutritional assessment for an individualized nutritional care and hydration plan including counselling and quarterly reviews.
  • An enhanced weight-monitoring program allows all weight variances to be addressed immediately ensuring the resident's nutritional well-being.
  • Special diets, including texture modification and nutritional supplements prescribed by the Medical Director or registered dietitian, are provided within the regular cost of care. Any devices that assist or enable the resident to eat independently are also provided within the cost of care.
  • A registered dietitian is available to discuss individual diet needs and concerns with residents and their family members.

Special Occasions

  • The Garden View Café, Fireside Lounge, Craft Room and Auditorium are available for special family occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries.
  • Families are welcome to bring in food items for special family occasions, with the exception of foods containing mushrooms, shrimp or shellfish. Staff have severe airborne allergies to these items.
  • The Home offers special occasion catering services for a fee. Costs for catering will be billed directly to the organizer. A catering menu is available on the resident information boards.
Life Enrichment Activities

The Life Enrichment Department is responsible for the promotion and delivery of care that enhances the quality of life of each resident.

Recreation and Social Activities

  • Recreation/leisure programs may be large (bingo, sing-song, parties) or smaller (bowling, cooking, current events) in nature and are held during the day and in the evening, on weekdays and weekends.
  • Activities take place on the resident units, in the Auditorium and other locations throughout the Home.
  • A variety of community outings are also offered. For certain special outings (shopping trips, luncheons), residents pay their own expenses. All other related supplies and equipment needed for recreation and social programs are covered by the Home.
  • Events are advertised in the morning announcements, posters and monthly calendars.

Restorative Care and Therapy

Sun Parlor Home provides an organized program of therapy services to meet the restorative, therapeutic and functional needs of the residents.

  • Planned and designed by an inter-professional team including physiotherapists and occupational therapists.
  • Equipment required to provide most therapy treatments is provided by the Home.
  • When long-term use of a wheelchair, walker or other mobility equipment is required, the Home will assist the resident and family to make arrangements to access qualified professionals who will conduct assessments. These assessments will help ensure that the proper equipment is purchased.
  • Support will also be provided to access funding programs such as the province's Assistive Devices Program (ADP).

Religious and Spiritual Practices

  • Weekly and special services are held on the resident units and on the main floor
  • Opportunities are provided for worship, spiritual counselling, one-to-one visitation, funeral and memorial services.

Pet Therapy Program

  • A Pet Therapy Program of pet visitation for residents is available through the Sun Parlor Home Volunteer program.
