Property Taxes and Tax Rates

Property taxes represent the largest source of revenue for the County of Essex. These taxes help fund essential services and programs including road maintenance and construction, emergency medical services, long-term care, libraries, and other County services that support our communities.

Understanding Your Property Tax Bill

Your annual property tax bill is issued by your local municipality and has three components:

  • County of Essex taxes
  • Education taxes
  • Local municipal taxes

The total amount payable is calculated by applying the applicable tax rates to your property's assessed values as determined by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC).

County Tax Rates

Each year, Essex County Council adopts a Tax Rate By-law that establishes the County's tax rates for all property classes.
Property classes include:
  • Residential
  • Multi-Residential
  • Commercial
  • Industrial
  • Pipeline
  • Farmland
  • Managed Forest
The County portion of your property taxes is calculated by multiplying the County tax rate for your property class by the assessed value of your property.

Example

If a residential property is assessed at $200,000 and the County residential tax rate is 0.00482987:

$200,000 × 0.00482987 = $965.97

The resulting amount represents the County portion of the property taxes payable.

Annual Tax Rate By-laws

The County's annual Tax Rate By-law establishes tax ratios, tax rates, and related tax policies approved by County Council.
