Essex-Windsor EMS offers in-school AED/CPR awareness sessions
Already more than 1,000 area students have been instructed
If you don’t know much about life-saving AED units, or how to operate one, your kids might.
With grade schools and high schools having reopened for students this month, Essex-Windsor EMS aims to continue providing AED/CPR awareness sessions to as many Grade 6-12 students as possible, in all corners of the County.
EWEMS so far in 2025 has taught nearly 1,100 area students about AEDs and CPR, including at the following schools:
- In March and April at Northwood Public School in South Windsor, for 417 students;
- From April to June at Beacon Heights Public School in Tecumseh, for 209 students;
- In April at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Elementary School in Stoney Point, for 38 students;
- In May at Ecole Elementaire Catholique Saint-Ambroise in St. Joachim, for 12 students.
An AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) is a portable electronic device that can restart the heart of a person of any age who experiences cardiac arrest. The device monitors the patient’s heartbeat and, if necessary, can deliver one or more heart-resuscitating electric shocks. Minutes matter when someone suffers cardiac arrest. Administering an AED can mean the difference between life and death.
EWEMS has conducted hands-on AED/CPR education sessions at numerous schools in the City of Windsor and County of Essex over the past two years, and ramped it up in the spring. Tutorials are two hours long for each participating classroom. Each student learns how to use an AED and administer CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).
There is an AED unit within every school in Windsor and Essex County, thanks to the philanthropy of the Cremasco family.
Essex-Windsor EMS is accepting school bookings for the 2025-26 school year. For more information go to https://www.countyofessex.ca/emergency-services/automated-external-defibrillators/
