Big Creek Bridge Reopens Ahead of Schedule

The County of Essex is pleased to announce that the Big Creek Bridge project on County Road 42, just outside Tilbury, has been completed ahead of schedule and within budget. The road is now reopened.

The $3-million infrastructure project included the complete replacement of the bridge deck, reconstruction of the bridge walls and pier, replacement of the barrier walls and guiderail, and installation of new asphalt pavement.

Engineering design work began early in 2025 to accommodate the lengthy construction timeline. County Council approved this project for early tendering in October 2025, and work at the site began in February. The project was completed nearly two months ahead of schedule.

"The County thanks motorists and residents for their patience while we completed this critical infrastructure project," said Karyn Templin, Manager of Design and Construction with the County's Infrastructure and Planning Services Department.  "The Contractor, Front Construction, did an excellent job maintaining its schedule and, together with the County's engineering consultant, Haddad Morgan and Associates, successfully addressed several unanticipated issues during construction.  We are pleased with how smoothly the work progressed and appreciate the efforts of the entire project team."

Minor restoration work will continue near the roadway in the coming weeks, as weather permits. 

Motorists are reminded to watch for occasional flagging operations and follow all posted signage.
