Essex County Construction and Road Closures Update – September 14, 2026

County Road 42 is now open between County Road 35 and Queen Street South (Kent Road 1). Lane restrictions will be occurring at the bridge to complete painting operations.

County Road 12 will be closed between County Road 11 and County Road 15 for bridge work beginning, Monday, June 8 for approximately 6 months.  Please use caution and follow the posted detour.

County Road 34 will be closed between County Road 37 and Kent Road 1 for bridge work beginning Monday, July 13 for approximately 11 weeks. Please use caution and follow the posted detour.

County Road 20 will be closed between County Road 3 (Malden Road) and County Road 10 (Middle Sideroad) beginning September 14 for 1 week.  Following the 1-week closure, there will be lane restrictions in each direction, which will continue for an additional 3 weeks for culvert rehabilitation.  Please use caution and follow the posted detour.

County Road 3 will have lane restrictions between County Road 8 and Canard Drive beginning Tuesday, September 8 for road construction.

County Road 11 will have lane restrictions between Texas Road and County Road 12 beginning Tuesday, September 8 for road construction.

County Road 9 will have lane restrictions between South Talbot Road and County Road 7 beginning Tuesday, September 8 for road construction.

County Road 31 will have lane restrictions between County Road 8 and County Road 14 beginning Wednesday, September 9 for road construction.

County Road 8 will have lane restrictions between County Road 31 and HWY 77 beginning Monday, September 14 for road construction.

County Road 46 will have lane restrictions between 8th Concession and County Road 17 beginning Monday, September 14 for road construction.

Highway 3 Update: On Tuesday, September 15, westbound Highway 3 traffic between Essex Road 31 and Essex Road 23 will move back onto the original highway, which will become the new westbound lanes. Both eastbound and westbound traffic will remain one lane in each direction while crews continue work in the median, with left turn lanes open at each intersection until the end of November. 

Motorists may experience short, temporary delays at signalized intersections while the transition is underway. Ontario Provincial Police officers and designated project traffic control personnel will be present to assist and direct traffic safely through the area. Motorists are asked to exercise caution, follow all posted signage, and adhere to directions provided on site.

Please exercise PATIENCE with the line painting operations. Be prepared to drive slowly and do not drive over the wet paint to prevent damage to your vehicle 

County Road 42 Improvements are scheduled to begin on Monday, September 14th.  This is the final phase of our multi-year County Road 42 corridor reconstruction, Phase 5. The limits of this work will span from the new County Road 43 roundabout to the City of Windsor border.  The completion of Phase 5 work will include:

  • Installation of new storm sewers and watermain.
  • Widening of County Road 42 from the new County Road 43 roundabout to the City of Windsor border.
  • The addition of new sidewalks, curbs, streetlighting and landscaping.

During the completion of Phase 5 work, intermittent road closures and detours through construction work zone will be experience.

It is anticipated that all major construction activity will continue through December 2026 and will restart again in Spring of 2027.  Construction is anticipated to be complete by Summer of 2027
