Construction and Road Closures Update – May 29, 2026
Work to install signal lights at Howard Avenue (County Road 9) and County Road 10 in Amherstburg begins Monday
Installation of new signal lights at the intersection of Howard Avenue (County Road 9) and County Road 10 in Amherstburg begins this coming Monday.
The work will take approximately two weeks to complete, and the public is likely to encounter flagging operations, as well as four-way flashing red signals, which are to be treated as a four-way stop.
That’s one of three impactful new County of Essex road projects beginning in early June.
The others:
(1) A week from this coming Monday, the posted detour for the Big Creek Bridge project in eastern Lakeshore will change. Currently, and since the project to replace Big Creek Bridge on County Road 42 began on February 17, the posted detour for the closure has used County Road 37. But beginning Monday, June 8, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation is closing CR 37 for work they are doing on the CR 37 overpass over Highway 401. So, for the remainder of the nine-month Big Creek Bridge project, the County needs to shift its detour – about 3.5 km to the west, from CR 37 to County Road 35. Please use caution and follow the posted detour signs! And be prepared for the detour change on June 8.
(2) A reminder that rehabilitation of the River Canard Bridge on County Road 12 in Essex is scheduled to start Monday, June 8. County Road 12 will be closed between County Road 11 (Walker Road) and County Road 15 (just west of Gesto) for approximately six months. Please follow the posted detour.

The intersection of County Road 42 and Lesperance Road in Tecumseh reopened Thursday in three of four directions: north- and south-bound Lesperance, and eastward onto CR 42. County Road 42 immediately west of Lesperance Road, however, remains closed for a short section, as part of the enhancement and widening of CR 42 to four lanes westward from Lesperance to County Road 43 (Banwell Road). And a reminder to please exercise PATIENCE with line-painting operations. Be prepared to drive slowly, and do NOT drive over the wet paint, to prevent damage to your vehicle.
