Construction and Road Closures Update – September 4, 2026

Five new road construction projects are set to begin over the next two weeks. Three start on Tuesday.

County Road 20 in Amherstburg will be closed for one week between County Road 3 (Malden Road) and County Road 10 (Middle Sideroad) beginning September 14. And following the one-week closure, there will be lane restrictions in each direction for an additional three weeks, for culvert rehabilitation. Please be patient, use caution and follow the posted detour!

County Road 3 in LaSalle will have lane restrictions for road construction between County Road 8 and Canard Drive beginning Tuesday, September 8.

County Road 9 (Howard Avenue) on the LaSalle/Tecumseh border will have lane restrictions for road construction between South Talbot Road and County Road 7 (Huron Church Line Road) beginning Tuesday, September 8.

County Road 11 on the Amherstburg/Essex border will have lane restrictions for road construction between Texas Road and County Road 12 beginning Tuesday, September 8.

County Road 31 on the Kingsville/Leamington border will have lane restrictions for road construction between County Road 8 and County Road 14 beginning Wednesday, September 9.

Phase 5 of County Road 42 project begins

County of Essex Infrastructure and Planning Services has begun informing impacted residents and businesses that preparations are underway to begin the final phase of the multi-year County Road 42 corridor reconstruction project.

Phase 5 work will span westward on CR 42 from the roundabout at County Road 43 (Banwell Road) to the City of Windsor border, or to slightly east of Lauzon Road.

Work on Phase 5 is scheduled to begin as early as September 14, 2026 and will include:

• Installation of new storm sewers and watermain.
• Widening of CR 42 from two lanes to four.
• The addition of new sidewalks, curbs, streetlighting and landscaping, thus extending westward those same enhancements along CR 42 all the way from the roundabout at County Road 19 (Manning Road).

During Phase 5 work, impacted residents and businesses will, or may, experience intermittent road closures and detours through the construction work zone, but will continue to have access to their property or business. However, such properties are likely to encounter construction activity, delays and possible short-term disruptions to driveway access.

It is anticipated that all major construction activity for Phase 5 will continue through December 2026, restarting again in spring 2027. Such work is anticipated to be completed by summer 2027, to conclude the years-long County Road 42 project.

Meantime, Phase 4 of the project is all but complete. All four newly widened, newly paved lanes on CR 42 between Lesperance Road and County Road 43 (Banwell Road) opened more than two weeks ago. Only occasional, single-lane, day-time reductions – on one side at a time, for finish-up landscaping work – remain prior to project completion. Otherwise, drivers can navigate either east or west along any of widened County Road 42’s four lanes – from the roundabout at CR 43 (Banwell) eastward all the way to the roundabout at County Road 19 (Manning Road). Work on Phase 4 (Lesperance to Banwell) began on March 16, and was substantially completed more than a month ahead of schedule on August 14.

All other County of Essex construction alerts this week are continuations:

County Road 42 in Lakeshore is now open between County Road 35 and Queen Street South (Kent Road 1), after reconstruction of Big Creek Bridge. Work began in February. Lane restrictions, however, will occur at the bridge to complete painting operations.

County Road 12 in Essex is closed, long-term, between County Road 11 (Walker Road) and County Road 15 (just west of Gesto) for rehabilitation of the River Canard Bridge. Work began June 8 and is expected to continue for approximately six months. Please use caution and follow the posted detour.

County Road 34 in Leamington is closed between County Road 37 and Kent Road 1, for replacement of the South Dales Drain culvert. Work began July 20. The work is expected to last approximately 11 weeks. Please use caution and follow the posted detour.

And a reminder to please exercise PATIENCE with line-painting operations. Be prepared to drive slowly, and do NOT drive over the wet paint, to prevent damage to your vehicle.
